Why Does Powder Stick to the Sealing Area? 6 Ways to Improve Powder Pouch Sealing

Powder pouch sealing looks simple from the outside, but achieving a clean and reliable seal can be challenging.

Fine powders such as milk powder, flour, coffee powder, protein powder and spice powder can easily generate dust during filling. If the powder enters the sealing area, it may become trapped between the film layers.

The result can include:

  • Weak seals
  • Powder leakage
  • Open bags
  • Uneven sealing
  • Poor package appearance
  • Product contamination around the sealing area

So, when packaging powder, filling accuracy is only part of the problem. Keeping the sealing area clean is equally important.

1. Why Does Powder Reach the Sealing Area?

There are several possible reasons.

Fine Powder Particles

Very fine powders can become suspended in the air during filling.

Products such as:

  • Leche en polvo
  • Harina
  • Proteína en polvo
  • Café molido
  • Cocoa powder
  • Especias en polvo

can generate significant dust depending on their physical properties.

When the powder falls into the bag, some particles may remain around the bag opening.

Product Falling From a High Position

The greater the distance between the filling outlet and the product surface, the more opportunity there may be for fine powder to become airborne.

For powder applications, the filling structure and product-drop distance therefore need to be considered together.

High Filling Speed

Increasing production speed can also affect powder behavior.

When the filling cycle becomes faster, powder may have less time to settle before the sealing process begins.

This is particularly important for small sachets and high-speed powder packaging.

2. Powder Inside the Seal Can Cause Leakage

A heat-sealed pouch depends on direct contact between the packaging film layers.

If powder particles are trapped between the layers, the sealing surfaces may not completely contact each other.

Instead of:

Film + Film → Strong Seal

you may get:

Film + Powder + Film → Weak Seal

Even if the sealing temperature appears correct, the final package can still have sealing problems.

This is why simply increasing the sealing temperature is not always the right solution.

3. How Can a Powder Packing Machine Reduce This Problem?

A properly configured powder packing machine can address the problem from several directions.

Auger Filling

For many powder applications, an auger filling system provides controlled dosing and can be integrated with vertical packing machines.

The filling system should be selected according to the powder's characteristics, filling weight and required accuracy.

Dust Collection

Dust collection can help reduce airborne powder around the filling and sealing area.

This can be particularly useful for fine powders that generate dust during filling.

Bag Mouth Cleaning

For some applications, cleaning the bag mouth before sealing can help remove residual powder from the sealing area.

This is especially useful when the product is fine and dusty.

Controlled Filling Process

The filling speed, filling position and timing between filling and sealing can also influence the amount of powder remaining around the bag opening.

4. Sealing Temperature Is Not the Only Factor

When customers see a weak seal, their first reaction is often:

“Should we increase the sealing temperature?”

Not necessarily.

A reliable seal depends on several factors:

Temperature + Pressure + Dwell Time + Clean Sealing Surface

If powder is trapped inside the sealing area, increasing temperature alone may not solve the problem.

In some cases, excessive temperature can even damage the packaging film.

Therefore, powder sealing problems should be investigated systematically rather than solved by changing only one parameter.

5. Different Powders Behave Differently

Not all powder products create the same packaging challenges.

Por ejemplo:

PolvoPossible Packaging Concern
HarinaFine dust
Milk PowderFine particles and static
Coffee PowderBulk density and flowability
Protein PowderDust and flow characteristics
Spice PowderFine particles and contamination around seal
Cocoa PowderFine dust and adhesion

This is why packaging-machine testing with the actual product is important.

Two powders with the same filling weight may behave very differently during filling and sealing.

6. What Can Be Adjusted During Machine Testing?

When testing a powder packing machine, engineers can evaluate several parameters:

  • Auger filling speed
  • Volumen de llenado
  • Filling time
  • Product-drop position
  • Film pulling speed
  • Sealing temperature
  • Sealing pressure
  • Sealing time
  • Recogida de polvo
  • Bag-mouth cleaning
  • Distance between filling and sealing

The goal is not simply to achieve the target weight.

The finished bag should also have:

Accurate Weight + Clean Seal + Good Appearance + Stable Production

Conclusión

Powder packaging problems are not always caused by the sealing system itself.

In many applications, the real issue begins earlier — during powder filling and dust generation.

When fine powder reaches the sealing area, even a correctly adjusted heat-sealing system may produce weak or inconsistent seals.

For this reason, a powder packaging solution should consider the complete process:

Auger Filling → Powder Control → Bag Formation → Sealing → Finished Bag

A well-designed powder packing machine should not only measure the right amount of powder. It should also help keep the sealing area clean and maintain stable packaging performance.
